Android 5.0 and newer
Android phones with OS 5.0 or newer need to enable the ‘Priority’ mode.
A detailed, illustrated guide can be found on Gizmodo.
The steps are:
- Change the volume with the hardware button once so that a pop-up menu at the top of the screen appears
- In this menu, click on “None” and on “Indefinitely”
- You are ready to participate !
If you expect a very important call or want to allow somebody to reach you in an emergency, a more sophisticated setup is required:
- Change the volume with the hardware button once so that a pop-up menu at the top of the screen appears
- In this menu, click on “Priority” and on “Indefinitely”
- Go to Settings / Sound & Notifications / Interruptions
- In this view, look for “Priority Interruptions” and enable calls.
- Disable the other two items: Events and Reminders / Messages
- Below, set “Calls/Messages from” to “Starred Contacts only”
- Go to your Contacts and favorite/star all the people who shall be able to contact you
- You are ready to participate !
Android 4.4.2 and older
If your phone does not yet have Android 5, follow these steps:
- Put the phone / tablet in silent mode but putting the volume to 0
- Avoid leaving the phone / table lying somewhere with the display visible.
- For example, if you have it lying on the table, turn it around so the display faces downwards (see picture below).
