This page features the work I am doing as part of my job at OFFIS. OFFIS is an applied research institute attached to, but not officially part of the University of Oldenburg. Research assistants at OFFIS are typically funded by working on R&D projects. Thanks to the relation to the university we can at the same time be PhD students and contribute to teaching.
R&D Projects
As part of my job at OFFIS I have been involved in the following R&D projects:
HaptiMap, Haptic, Audio and Visual Interfaces for Maps and Location Based Services, is European research project with 14 partners, including NAVTEQ and SIEMENS CLAB, that aims at making maps and location based services more accessible by using several senses like touch, hearing and vision. It is co-funded by the EC as part of the Seventh Framework Programme. My main roles are interface design research and managing the work package concerned with the integration of the project’s results into demonstrators.
OLB Baufin, Nutzerzentrierte Konzeption und Implementierung eines Online-Baufinanzierungsberaters, is an industry project with the Oldenburgische Landesbank AG (OLB), a regional bank, that aims at understanding the process of financing real estate from the users’ perspective and reflecting that knowledge in an online consultant.
HealthNavigator is a research project that is funded by the EU as part of the Interreg IVa programme. Together with GewiNet, Bad Essen, the Schüchtermann-Klinik, Bad Rothenfelde and Roessingh Research, Enschede we aim at motivating patients in cardiac rehabilitation to hike during their free time while providing safety via vital sign monitoring.
Museum Guide Jever is an industry project where a mobile, interactive museum guide for a castle in the city of Jever was developed. [NWZOnline news article (German)]

Student Project Groups
Student groups are a unique offer of the CS department of the University of Oldenburg. In such groups, 6 to 12 students team up for a one-year R&D project.
In 2007/08 I co-supervised the student project group Olivanda, OLdenburgs Interactive VirtuAl Networked meDiA. The students explored augmenting advertisement posters through handheld augmented reality using smartphone cameras. Parts of the results were published at the Mobile Interaction with the Real World Workshop (MIRW ’08) held in conjunction with MobileHCI ’08 in Amsterdam.
